Alice: Mother of Cinema

An immersive cinema experience follows the first female director in film history- Alice Guy-Blaché. It highlights her triumphs in the film industry, including the close-up camera shot, bringing narrative to screen, and the invention of colour. However, an industry dominated by the patriarchy we watch how her accomplishments and influence were systematically erased from history

Drawings and Concept

Featuring real people, including Alice Guy-Blaché, George Melies and Herbert Blaché, I looked at historical photos of them, as well as references of what people wore to film sets during the 1890’s to 1920’s. The silent films also had a huge influence, especially the invention of colour. All the costumes at the beginning begin the black and white world, until a pivotal moment in the play where technicolour is invented, leading to the introduction of colour in costume.
