The Great Theatre of The World

A Spanish Golden Age allegorical play that has been recontextualised to attract a contemporary audience. Inspired by how this play was traditionally performed in city squares on top of moving wagons, we thought of an equivalent space to todays society- the art gallery. It is a space where people and behaviour can be studied, displayed and questioned.

The piece is a play within a play, with the Auteur and the World staging a play where people are picked to play archetypal from society. We wanted to trick the into believing anyone could be chosen for the role, so it was important that the actors blended in, all wearing contemporary day clothing as they moved around the space of the theatre. As they were selected they transformed into their characters wearing artworks and makeup that expressed their archetype- The Pauper, The Worker, The Beauty, The Rich Man, The Discretion and The Queen. The plinths that created the stages were moveable throughout the standing audience and space, were also used to show status and hierarchy in society.
